Bonnets & Furry Slippers

In 2021, Comedienne and Actress, Mo’Nique, caused a stir after posting a video on social media. While traveling through Atlanta and Mississippi airports, Mo’ expressed her displeasure in Black women wearing bonnets, pajamas, and slippers in public.

Several of Mo’Nique’s followers agreed with her bold; yet motherly statement and felt she was only “schooling the young girls.” Other commenters did not receive her words with love and basically told Auntie Mo to mind her business and if you don’t like it, don’t wear it.

“You can take the girl out the hood, but you can’t take the hood out the girl.”

Mo’ is known for Queens of Comedy, The Parkers, and winning an Oscar in Precious. She also had a late-night talk show on BET and was the host on VH1’s Charm School, where she got the girls in line with tough love, but educated them on etiquette, manners and cooking tips.

It appears Mo’ was coming from an Auntie perspective in saying Black ladies should care a little extra about our public appearance to show we have the highest level respect for ourselves. Aka no house shoes outside of the house.
