Fortune Cookie

A Chinese restaurant we used to go to on the weekends provided a steam table of orange chicken, teriyaki chicken, sweet & sour chicken, green veggies, wontons, soups, etc. After checkout, each guest received 1 fortune cookie with a stuffed note and numbers on the back to play the imaginary lottery. The cookie was looked at a dessert and the note as positive words to ponder on… until it ended up in the nearest trashcan.

The cookie was my favorite from its light texture, crunchiness, and hint of sweetness, but the note provided “good fortune” that we believed in for a split second. If it reads, “My patience with others is good,” one may think of the time they displayed patience by helping an elder at the grocery store while the one with NO patience laughs in sarcasm.

For the new year, we were gifted “gratitude jars” to jot down gratifying moments that day, or motivational words to tell yourself. When having a bad day, look in the jar & grab a note for a smile, or write a short prayer for encouragement and toss it in!

Fun fact- Modernized fortune cookies are written by everyday freelance writers, like myself!
